September Intake: Responding To Complicated Grief

Self-Paced Course Overview

Defining and, therefore diagnosing complicated grief often leaves practitioners feeling confused and overwhelmed.

Grief is a normal event that occurs to everyone sooner or later. While the majority of bereaved individuals adjust over time, for a variety of reasons a significant minority of people fail to integrate the loss. For these individuals

grief remains intense, painful, unremitting and, for many, affects their ongoing ability to function. These people are also at higher risk of morbidity and mortality.

Whether we call it prolonged grief (PGD) or complicated grief (CG), most practitioners agree that this grief doesn't budge. Those bereaved and suffering with complicated grief often feel stuck in their pain. Their therapists frequently also feel stuck and unable to help their clients come to terms with the reality and consequences of the death, manage their strong emotions, resolve complications and re-engage with life.

This Online Short Course will introduce participants to theories of complicated or prolonged grief, as well as providing a basic introduction to the theories which inform Complicated Grief Treatment (CGT), it's aims and strategies.

A basic understanding of current grief theories would be an advantage to participants.

Learning Outcomes

During this self-paced course, participants will learn how to:

  • Appraise the symptoms and clinical presentation of complicated grief and formulate assessment for complicated grief.
  • Differentiate complicated grief, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Implement the procedures and processes involved in Complicated Grief Treatment
  • Identify and implement the key strategies and some techniques used in Complicated Grief Treatment and determine where and when to refer, who to turn to for support and how to keep yourself and your client safe.
