September Intake: Perinatal Loss

Self-Paced Course Overview

The death of a child is considered to be one of the most tragic events that can happen to a family.  When a baby dies regardless of age or gestation , parents lose their hopes, dreams and expectations, and the ripple effect is likely to be vast and long-lasting.

Some of the common issues that parents face when a baby dies include:

  • Loss of identity; a mother and partner may feel like parents, but they have no baby to hold.
  • Feeling painful, intense emotion such as guilt, blame or shame
  • Difficulties in relationships as people all grieve differently
  • Experiencing stigmatised and disenfranchised grief

This self-paced course is designed for health care professionals who provide emotional support to parents experiencing perinatal loss. It focuses on the care of families in hospitals and is designed to increase knowledge and understanding about parental grief when a baby dies. The course will identify effective support strategies to help parents cope and adapt to loss over time. It will also explore what is needed to help perinatally bereaved parents feel well supported and cared for in health care settings.
