September Intake: Guiding Clients Through Palliative Care

Self-Paced Course Overview

Palliative care provides holistic care to optimise quality of life for people and their families living with life-limiting illness. During the journey from diagnosis towards end-of-life, the patient, their family and friends experience grief as they deal with many varied losses along the way.

This self-paced course will consider key aspects of working with patients as well as their families at end-of-life; in particular, having conversations that can be difficult at times. Various life-space factors will be explored in the context of the various illness and dying trajectories. We will also review care choices and strategies to help clients prepare for end-of-life and work towards a good death, with the aim that complex bereavement issues in surviving family and/or significant other can be reduced.

Participants will explore the many facets of grief experienced by patients and their loved ones as they negotiate they journey towards end-of-life and beyond. We will consider the various support needs of both family/carers and the patient with life-limiting illness. Strategies to help support the grieving process and acknowledge the losses experienced throughout the illness trajectory, at end-of-life and into bereavement will be discussed.

While health professionals working with families and people who are seriously ill are more familiar with death than most, the frequency of deaths and dealing with their own anxieties relating to death and dying can have a negative impact on wellbeing. This can place health care workers at risk of vicarious trauma, empathetic stress fatigue, and ultimately burnout. Strategies to support our work in this critical area of healthcare will also be explored.

Learning Outcomes
